The name of the species is an abbreviation of bob-tailed cat. In the wild, these animals may live to 10 or 12 years of age and in captivity up to 25 years.

These animals primarily occur in scrubby country and broken forests. Highly adaptable animals, they may also adapt to swamps, farmlands and arid lands. They range from coast to coast throughout southern Canada. In appearance, they resemble the Canadian lynx. Bobcat animal babies are sometimes available at farms.
