The tail of the animal is tipped with black. Unlike the true lynxes it is white on the underside. The coats of these animals are various shades of buff-brown and are marked with dark spots. These animals are the only native members of the family Felidae found in Kansas.

The name of this species is an abbreviation of bob-tailed cat. It refers to its short, dark ringed tail. These animals have also been called “wild cats.” The species is closely related to the lynxes. They are much smaller than the lynxes. Their legs are proportionally more slender and the feet are also relatively much smaller.
